The Academy of Early Music

Ann Arbor, Michigan

Why Join the Academy?

You’re probably receiving this newsletter—or reading this article on the Academy’s website—because you enjoy early classical music.  The Academy of Early Music offers southeastern Michigan music lovers historically informed performances in intimate settings, where you can meet the performers and examine their instruments.

We sponsor some of the finest local ensembles and performers, such as:

La Gente D’Orfeo  Ann Arbor Grail Singers

Martha Folts, harpsichord / clavichord  Beth Gilford, recorder

Lorna Young Hildebrandt, soprano  Debra Lonergan, Baroque cello

Edward Parmentier, harpsichord  Kiri Tollaksen, Cornetto

We also welcome up-and-coming early musicians from elsewhere in the country (and the world!), including ensembles from the Eastman School of Music, McGill University, and Oberlin.  We’re proud to have presented concerts by:

I Furiosi ▪ Newberry Consort ▪ Anaphantasia▪ Mirabel Quartet ▪ The Rose Ensemble

 Our Goals for the Academy

We want to provide musicians like these a venue for performing lesser-known classical music to a discerning audience—and give our audiences rare musical experiences of a kind not readily available elsewhere.  Over the next year, we hope to sponsor or co-sponsor some larger ensembles, and we want to make it easier for out-of-town early musicians to perform in Ann Arbor.

We also want to increase member participation and activities, with master classes, house concerts, workshops, and events for singers.  We’re working on increasing our collaborations with local universities—such as the use of the rare and beautiful Rösch violin from the U-M Stearns Collection featured in our forthcoming February concert.

To pay our performers sufficient fees to cover their expenses, the Academy depends on memberships and donations—concert ticket sales are not enough.  Part of our organizational mission is to interest more people in attending early music events, so we don’t want to let high ticket prices discourage potential concertgoers.

How Can You Help?

First, join the Academy! Members receive this bimonthly newsletter, as well as discounted tickets to all Academy-sponsored concerts. Members are also invited to special Academy events. Membership is $15 for full-time students, $20 for individuals, and $35 for a family or organization. In a family or organizational membership, all members are eligible for discounted concert tickets.

Second, become a Friend of the Academy by adding a $25, $50, or $100 donation to your membership.  The Academy is run entirely by volunteers, and we have a very small budget.  Unlike major charities, even modest donations to the Academy will make a big difference in our ability to sponsor early music performances in Ann Arbor.

The Academy of Early Music is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so your membership is a tax-deductible contribution.  We will acknowledge all memberships and donations with a thank-you note for your financial records.

Just fill out and mail the membership/donation form that you can download from our website.
